The North Shore Studio’s Photography Group Explores Mixed Media

Our photography group recently expanded their artistic boundaries with a mixed media project. The result of these abstract photographs is an explosion of vibrant, saturated colors tempered with fluid lines and shapes.

When selecting the final photographs, the artists discussed the most successful elements of the photographs in detail. This conversation elicited comments about seeing recognizable forms and symbols within the pictures. (For example, artist Jack O’Sullivan sees a comet in space in photograph #4.) Artists also discussed inferred references to emotions in conjunction with color choices, shadows and brightness.

It is our hope that these images incite thought and emotion in you as well!

*Spoiler alert! The process information follows, so if you want to appreciate the images in mystery (which I highly recommend) stop reading here. You can always loop back to learn how they made these photographs afterwards! That said, these images began with original artwork made with 2d and 3d elements. The art was then placed under a glass vessel containing oil, water and sometimes food coloring. In the end, the artwork is photographed though the shifting patterns of these liquid elements.
