North Shore Volunteer Spotlight: Northwestern Summer Interns

Summer is internship season! This year the North Shore studio was lucky to have two students from Northwestern University join our community. (And that’s in addition to the four wonderful Lake Forrest College students we featured in last month’s Volunteer Spotlight!) Jared and Emily each brought unique talents with them to The Arts of Life and we’re grateful for all their hard work. Let’s find out a little more about these delightful young people…  EMILYAlthough her background is in Psychology, Emily (pictured above with artist Rebecca Turner) came to us interested in marketing. She helped promote both our annual Square Foot Show and Van GoGo’s summer show at SPACE in Evanston. Thanks in part to her outreach to local media and consistent posts on Facebook, Van GoGo played to a standing room only audience! “It makes me feel really happy that I could help make these events everyone put so much effort into successful,” said Emily. What does she like most about The Arts of Life? “My favorite thing is the community. Everyone, from the artists to the staff to the other volunteers, made me feel really welcome from the time I first started.” When her internship ended, Emily took a position with AmeriCorps and is now working in West Town. CONGRATS! And thanks you! JAREDWhen asked what he liked about The Arts of Life, Jared responded, “The artists and the atmosphere, which may be one in the same because it’s really the artists that create the atmosphere. Every member of the studio is just so enthusiastic and open minded.” We found the same to be true about Jared! He was excited about each new task presented to him. Help with art making? Sure! Write a press release? Of course! Drum for the Van GoGo? Yes please (check him out in purple in the picture below)! Jared’s strong relationships with the artists gave him a firm understanding of the studio, which made it possible for him to help us in a variety of ways. “Everyday does not feel like working, but rather like having a great time doing cool interesting things with good friends.” Thanks for joining our community, Jared!–  Do you know a talented college student with a background in art, marketing, public relations or design? Send ’em our way! We offer internships in a variety of areas for both credit and experience. Contact our Studio Coordinator Lyndsey Thompson (lthompson@artsoflife.org) for details.
