North Shore Volunteer Spotlight: Sandy Lang

Sandy Lang found The Arts of Life through ReEmployability, a program that supports workers injured on the job to transition back to work by volunteering. Like most ReEmployability volunteers, Sandy didn’t know what to expect from the studio. She didn’t have experience in the arts or working with people with disabilities, so at first she was a little intimidated. But the artists quickly saw Sandy as part of the community and then Sandy began seeing herself that way, too.Now Sandy’s an expert in transportation, lunch prep and daily responsibilities. She’s even gotten comfortable with arts facilitation — she’s pictured above helping artist Amanda Gantner with a photo transfer project. Sandy’s is a constant presence in the studio. Artists and staff alike rely on her to help us keep things running. Sandy has always been a little quiet at the studio and doesn’t seem to mind letting others take center stage.  This month, we want to celebrate Sandy by putting her in the Volunteer Spotlight! Expert interviewer Quinn Zenner spent a few minutes finding out more about Sandy… Check out their interview !—Quinn: How did you hear about Arts of Life?Sandy: I heard about The Arts of Life through my job because I got hurt at work. I was put into the ReEmployability program. Q: Do you volunteer anywhere else?S: No. This is my first volunteer job ever. Q: How long have you volunteered here?S: Four months. I started in February. I took a break because of my injury and then came back in August. I’m at the studio five days a week. Q: What do you like about The Arts of Life?S: I like the community. I like the organization. I like the artists, the staff… I like everything about the studio! I want to make sure the artists feel that I’m here not just to work, but also to become close to them. I hope they see me not only as a staff or volunteer, but also as a friend to help them in any way that I can, to be there for them and support them in any way. I just love it here. Q: What’s your favorite volunteer task?S: My favorite task is working with the artists. Everyday I learn something different about each individual artist. It’s nice to get to know them and get close to them. I try to make it easier for everyone to get what the need during the day.  Q: Who do you admire at the studio?S: I admire every single artist in a different way. When I came in, I didn’t know anything about this program or know anyone here, but now I like every individual for who they are. I get along with everyone. Everyone is different.  Q: What do you do when you’re not at The Arts of Life?S: I have three kids. I have a husband. So I take care of my kids at home, cook dinner, help with homework.
