Artist's Statement

I make art because I want to be happy. I feel and express and I am happy because I make it so everyone can see that I made art. I would rather make art than do anything. A picture of all different shapes and sizes. Letters and comics and all kinds of different things. I am happy because I make art. I draw advocacy. It’s different, making art. We make designs... create... be resourceful. People like that I do different things. I am different because of my artwork. My favorite things that I draw are the sun, clouds, grass, hippos, dolls, characters, people, birds, mice, a skeleton woodpecker, a wiener dog, a hippo, a spotted dog, bugs, and birds. People like that I do different things. Because I like it. Because I made it. Because I like to draw different things, new shapes and structures. I know a technique - that’s what I’m doing. The only way is to use markers, oil pastels, paint, and colored pencils. I like to work on paper. I use different techniques to draw and create. I want to achieve the award for doing art and drawing. I want to do things with clay and mosaics. I have goals. I’m inspired by my brother, Benjamin. He does Beatles and all kinds of things. I have great ideas because I have to make a picture. I am my favorite artist. When I look at my pictures, and when other people look at my pictures, that is what I’m inspired by. I’m inspired to help others, the studio, different things, and to do collaboration. The studio inspires me about doing artwork and drawing. I love making art.

Process Statement

For true artists, art is our first language. It is where we feel most fluent, where we can convey things that are difficult to say with words. Exploring this idea, Alex incorporates the tool we use for first learning how to communicate, the alphabet, into his own artistic language. His alphabet series features works such as “A is for Aardvark” and “S is for Seal,” in which letters and their associated animals cavort together playfully across the canvas. Using simple shapes and flat, bright colors to illuminate his language pictures, Alex’s fresh, direct approach appeals to our human yearning for simplicity and the nostalgia of childhood.
