Artist's Statement

I saw my painting and it was just beautiful. The woman bought it and she liked it. She was happy when she went there. I did that. I think when I first came here I thought I was an artist and I could paint anybody. I can do his eyes, and face, and jeans. Paint people. I gave them some lipstick. People can see what they got.I thought of it and I used texture and a yellow color. I must have combined colors with this. I mentioned to myself. Ok, I did this. I made patterns for that one. I used that red color and I probably used it with chalk pastels. I do remember value and depth. Remember when I had the clay, I had to put layers and layers on it. Then I painted it. It’s kind of nice that way.I like to be inspired when people see my art. It’s good that way. I draw anything. I can draw a tree or my mother. My brain is focusing on art when I do it. It’s good that when I make art I have to focus on it.

Process Statement

Ed’s artwork reveals an affinity for people and global civilizations, most notably with regard to marriage rituals, costuming and social customs. The broad spectrum of travel and cultural experience from Ed’s past enrich his expression with saturated colors and patterns. His artistic style translates across mediums as demonstrated in his growing portfolio of sculptures and works on paper. When discussing his artwork, Ed imagines where the figures in his picture will go after the image is drawn, where they will sleep at night, and what they were doing before he drew them. His rich inner world reveals an interest in people beyond their aesthetics while revealing a penchant for personal connection.
