Community Cartography Exhibit

October 5, 2012 – October 5, 2012

The Kinzie Corridor Gallery and The Arts of Life are set to host a Community Cartography exhibition in conjunction with Chicago Artists Month this October and November.  Opening night will be Friday, October 5, 2012 at 6:00 pm at Kinzie Corridor Gallery located at 2010 W. Carroll Ave and admission is free.  Focusing on the Chicago Artists Month’s theme of Art Block by Block, the gallery has put out a call to showcase Chicagoland artists that work with map-based imagery. The centerpiece of the exhibition will be a special project created by a The Arts of Life team led by the Chicago studio’s Caitlin Law, Alex Scott, and Tim Stone.
The theme of Chicago Artists Month 2012 examines the impact Chicago artists have on Chicago’s neighborhoods block by block and their ability to enhance Chicago’s cultural landscape.  Artists with and without disabilities from The Arts of Life are exploring this theme by creating and fostering relationships within the Kinzie Corridor community, in order to design a neighborhood map that displays these relationships.  Two versions of the neighborhood map will be created and present at the Community Cartography exhibition.  A large-scale version measuring 36″ x 48″ will be created using silkscreen and acrylic paint and a smaller take-away version will be created to highlight neighborhood businesses and artists.  The smaller version of the map will be distributed to local businesses, galleries, and studios in order to promote relationships within the Kinzie Corridor Community.
Please join us Friday, October 5 at 6:00 pm at Kinzie Corridor Gallery at 2010 West Carroll. Musicians are encouraged to sign up for the open mic at 7:00 pm.  Additionally, there will be live music performances by Chicago’s own About a Girl, as well as, traveling band Home Body from Massachusetts.
