Artist of the Month: Frances Roberts

With a new month, and warmer spring weather, it was time to rotate in a new Artist of the Month. Frances Roberts (FR) was selected for her bright imagery and stand-out shapes. Genre Specialist, Julia Klein (JNK) took some time to chat with her, and with curatorial committee member, Kris Schenkel (KKS). Frances (FR): I’m happy to be chosen. It’s my turn to be shown. JNK: Why did you choose Frances?Kris (KKS): She’s a good friend of mine. We’re coffee drinking buddies. She’s a good hard worker. Good sense of humor. (Her work) makes you feel more warm, more at ease, more calm and relaxed. She does abstract and it makes you want to fall back and wonder about how we suggest things to people. I guess how we look and perceive things from books or magazines, how we perceive it in the back of our head and then on paper or canvas, whether we’re doing abstract or more realism. She comes up with some crazy ideas.  JNK: Can you tell me about this work? Do you have a favorite?FR: The shapes make it different. Something comes to my mind. Do this shape, do that shape, turn it around. I make different shapes different ways, and I hope people will like them and buy them. I like them all.[[{“fid”:”11542″,”view_mode”:”default”,”fields”:{“format”:”default”,”field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]”:”Artwork by Frances Roberts”,”field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]”:”Abstract Drawing by Frances Roberts with Colored Pencil”},”type”:”media”,”attributes”:{“alt”:”Artwork by Frances Roberts”,”title”:”Abstract Drawing by Frances Roberts with Colored Pencil”,”height”:366,”width”:652,”class”:”media-element file-default”},”link_text”:null}]] JNK: How did you feel about getting to pick the artist? Do you like being a curator? KKS: Yeah I think it’s a lot of fun, I’m learning a lot from it so far. Learning how to hang up art, making it level. Being there and working with other artists as well as with Vincent. It’s really cool. JNK: How did you pick her specific works?KKS: I pretty much worked with her and we picked different sizes and shapes. We broke it down to 4-5 pieces that are related to each other. It’s like telling a story, like how Frances expresses herself and how she looks at certain kinds of art. JNK: Have you gotten good feedback?FR: Good feedback is when people buy stuff. I’m waiting to hear from around the studio what they think. I want to see how long it’s going to stay up there.JNK: What are you working on now?  FR: I don’t repeat the same thing. I change. I’m working on people now. I look at other artists and do it my way. I make sketches, and then I have to push myself to do the final. It needs to be quiet.  If you’re looking for a spring pick-me-up, come in and check out work by Frances Roberts at the Chicago Studio!
