CHI Intern Spotlight: Q & A with Marcella Apollonia

This Winter, the Chicago Studio was excited to have Marcella Apollonia join us as a Studio Intern.  Marcella supports our artists with artmaking, working on goals, using social media, and keeping our studio clean.  We are also excited to have her lead an art demonstration and art talk about emotion in art next month.  We sat down with Marcella to learn more about her interest in our studio and life outside The Arts of Life.       How did you get involved with The Arts of Life?“I got involved with The Arts of Life through DePaul. My professor, Brother Mark Elder, put me in contact with the organization.” What does your school and artistic background look like?“I am a Studio Art Major, with a concentration in painting. After graduation I plan on going to grad school to study Art Therapy. I hope to have my own practice one day, working with children, trauma patients, and people with disabilities.”  How long have you been involved with The Arts of Life?“About two months so far!” What are some of your favorite aspects of volunteering at The Arts of Life?“I have really enjoyed getting to know everyone on a personal level. My favorite part of the day is getting here in the morning and checking in with people. The artists that are here at nine are always eager to tell me what they are working on or things going on in their lives. I also really like completing goals with artists because it gives us time to learn about each other. It also gives me insight into the artist’s artistic style and drive.” What do you like to do outside of volunteering?“In my free time I love to explore new art techniques and paint. I go to museums and galleries as much as I can! A lot of my time is taken up with school work and a job at Little Beans Cafe. But when the weather is nice, l always find a way to get outdoors into nature.  I am also earning my minor in Italian, so that is another interest of mine. Next fall I will be living in Florence for three months to study art and become fluent in the language.”
