The Inserted Protagonist; North Shore Artist Spotlight of Rebecca Kubica

Rebecca Kubica is a diligent and imaginative artist who uses her art to forge deeper connections to stories that are meaningful to her. These stories are largely told through film because of this it is impossible to be fully immersed in something contain on a screen. Becky wants to fully participate in these stories, to forge alliances and friendships with the protagonist and so she uses her art-making practice as a way to build these connections. “I like to put myself alongside the main character. I like to go in and help them to get the bad guys.”Each piece tells a story which allows Becky to imagine what these friendships would look like. Her intense concentration creates a space for her to be contemplative, enabling her to insert herself and locate her place in the story. [[{“fid”:”13073″,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fields”:{“format”:”media_original”,”field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]”:””,”field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]”:””},”type”:”media”,”link_text”:null,”attributes”:{“height”:2250,”width”:3000,”class”:”media-element file-media-original”}}]]Focusing on creating works on paper, Kubica utilizes colored pencils and markers above other materials. “[I] like working in lines. I like to see and work in lines and [geometric] shapes.” Some artists focus on articulating light to shape their scene, Kubica emphasizes space using saturated, linear, and sharp shapes and lines. These shapes and lines are repeatedly colored over until the paper is smooth and shiny. The final piece has a glossy and worn sheen not normally seen in drawings. These shapes give her work a mosaic-like quality. Many small and intense segments of color congregate together to form a cohesive image. Becky gets caught up in the details and more-often-than-not can be found with her head bent low to the page in order to get the best view. [[{“fid”:”13074″,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fields”:{“format”:”media_original”,”field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]”:””,”field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]”:””},”type”:”media”,”link_text”:null,”attributes”:{“height”:2250,”width”:3000,”class”:”media-element file-media-original”}}]]Weaving together intense colors and jagged lines, Becky Kubica uses her work as a way to create a bright and playful environment within which she can explore her relationships with stories and characters that are meaningful to her.  [[{“fid”:”13075″,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fields”:{“format”:”media_original”,”field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]”:””,”field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]”:””},”type”:”media”,”attributes”:{“height”:2250,”width”:3000,”class”:”media-element file-media-original”},”link_text”:null}]]
