Volunteer Spotlight: Rosalind Franklin University

On November 13, 2013, The Arts of Life North Shore Studio were pleased to welcome an interprofessional team of future healthcare providers from Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS)  to the studio. They met us for an afternoon of activity and conversation about the heart. The heart-focused activities were a service-learning project designed by students in the RFUMS Interprofessional Teams and Culture in Healthcare Course.

The group of fifteen students set three main educational objectives for the afternoon; to describe the anatomy of the heart, the function of the heart and how to maintain good heart health through diet and exercise. 

The students gave a presentation, as well as conducted hands-on activities using 3D models of the heart, stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, an interactive dance known as the EKG-dance and the My Plate model. There was also a slideshow on imagery of the heart in art and in scientific illustration.

Eighteen of our North Shore artists participated in the health and wellness education activities and eight of the artists’ works are featured in this exhibit: Laura Bell, Russell Copenharve, Amanda Gantner, Laura Greenburg, Nikole Heusman, Laura McManus, Erinn Narriss, and Montell Payne.
Bringing health and wellness education together with art, the “Art of the Heart” exhibition showcases the artists’ interpretations of the heart in the Feet First Exhibition Hall beginning in February, American Heart Health Month. The show runs from February 4–March 14, 2014. Join us for a special program about the creation of the exhibit and The Arts of Life, Inc.  February 26th from 12:00–2:00 p.m. in the Feet First Exhibition Hall at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science located at 3333 Green Bay Road North Chicago, IL 60064. This event is free and open to the public.
