Meet Our Artists
We were founded with the idea that the studio belongs to its artists. The guiding principle behind our studio is to give people an opportunity to shape and be a member of an artistic community; a community that changes with the growing needs of the artists and one that is a contributing member of the larger society.
Join Our Studio
Arts of Life offers artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities an alternative career path designed to help enrich their lives as working artists.

We are excited to announce Community on the Make | Arts of Life 2000 – 2025 at Design Museum of Chicago!
“Yet once you’ve come to be part of this particular patch, you’ll never love another… But never a lovely so real.” — Nelson Algren, Chicago: City on the Make
This group exhibition is a celebration of what we’ve accomplished—but also a provocation. It asks us to reconsider: Who is art for? Who gets to shape culture? And how can design become a tool of liberation? Community on the Make highlights artists, staff, and volunteers both past and present who have shaped our community while also allowing the public to contribute and engage in the exhibition. Community on the Make is not just a reflection on where we’ve been. It’s a declaration of where we’re going.

Thanks to more than 100 donors, we secured the full $15,000 challenge match and raised $62,500! We are beyond grateful for the generous support of our community. If you haven’t given yet, it’s not too late! Generosity today ensures our artists are supported no matter what lies ahead.
As we step into a new season and new fiscal year, we are inspired by a transitional practice that North Shore staff member Travis Morehead and artist Omar Abulsheikh started recently:
“Omar and I are good friends, and we’ve developed this ritual of collaborative drawing at the end of the day. One of us will start by drawing a line or a shape, and then we take turns building the composition, riffing on whatever the other added last.”
At a time when the value of people with disabilities is being considered in terms of taxes paid and burdens borne, we know the truth. Our world is more creative, more connected, and more open-hearted with our artists in it. Community is built in small moments of connection and collaboration. Your generosity helps to make those moments possible.
