August Artist of the Month: Tim Stone

August’s Artist of the Month wall is a geometric vision! Abstract artists, Susan Pasowicz (SLP) chose to highlight fellow curatorial committee member and lifelong artist, Tim Stone (TS).  On view now at the Chicago Studio are several newer works united by their focus on shape. Studio Manager, Catherine Norcott (CN), and Studio Social Media Pro, Mike Marino (MM) sat down with them both to discuss the show and their individual practices.[[{“fid”:”13068″,”view_mode”:”default”,”fields”:{“format”:”default”,”field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]”:”Family Reunion, drawing by Tim Stone with marker, featuring red, blue, green and white triangles”,”field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]”:”Family Reunion by Tim Stone, a marker drawing”},”type”:”media”,”link_text”:null,”attributes”:{“alt”:”Family Reunion, drawing by Tim Stone with marker, featuring red, blue, green and white triangles”,”title”:”Family Reunion by Tim Stone, a marker drawing”,”height”:366,”width”:652,”class”:”media-element file-default”}}]] CN: Sue, why did select Tim? SLP: Because he does good artwork.  He uses lots of different materials, watercolors, and stuff like.  I like that we both do abstract artwork.    CN: Tim, how would you describe your current practice?TS: I use several colors in each project.  I’ve been working on making thicker lines with pencil too. I get inspired by other artists’ work.  I like to look through the Art Institute’s and the MCA’s collections.   CN: How do you feel about being artist of the month? What do you think led Sue to select you?TS: Great!  It was really exciting to be chosen.  I’m glad to see my new work up, so other people can see them. It was really nice of Sue to pick me.  I think she chose my work because of how unique it is. I feel like my artwork is pleasing to the eye, nice to look at.   MM: How long have you been at the studio, Tim? And how did you hear about the studio?TS: I started in 2010, so 7 years now! One of the assistants at L’Arche told me about it. CN: How would you describe Tim’s art to someone who hadn’t seen it?SLP: It’s good work.  He is sensational!  He uses shapes, sometime value and sometimes colors.  His work can be very colorful.  He likes to use good paper.  Usually medium to small pieces, that way he has room to work.      CN: Tim, you’ve been working at the studio for many years. What do you want people to know about your artistic background?TS: I’m a unique artist.  My style has changed over time.  I’m using different materials, but the shapes have stayed fairly similar.  I used to use many different colors, all together.  But now I only use certain colors together, I’m being more selective.[[{“fid”:”13069″,”view_mode”:”default”,”fields”:{“format”:”default”,”field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]”:”Tim Stone seated at his desk holding a pencil and working on an image.”,”field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]”:”Tim Stone working on a drawing at his desk “},”type”:”media”,”link_text”:null,”attributes”:{“alt”:”Tim Stone seated at his desk holding a pencil and working on an image.”,”title”:”Tim Stone working on a drawing at his desk “,”height”:366,”width”:652,”class”:”media-element file-default”}}]] MM: Tell us more about your arts practice before you came to the studio?TS: Before that, I used to do drawings and paintings. I’ve always been an abstract artist. MM: What is your favorite part of working at The Arts of Life?TS: I like everything! My friends, getting to work on artwork, everything! CN: If you could see your work on exhibition anywhere, where would it be?TS: Definitely the MCA! CN: What are you working on now?TS: I’m working on a pencil sketch right now.  I’ve been building up layers of lines. CN: Do you have anything else to add?SLP: Tim is a great worker and a good artist.   I like him alot!  He’s a good person to be around.  He keeps up with his skills and does the best that he can.  It’s the same with me, I try to do my best, I might work a long time on the same thing, but I try the best I can.  I think this show is going to turn out the best for everybody! MM: I agree! Tim is a very friendly and nice person. He is like a part of my family now, not just a friend.
