Celebrate 25 Years with Arts of Life!

Welcome to the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Arts of Life, a milestone that marks a quarter of a century of elevating the broader arts community by challenging the notion that disabled artists are “outside” their contemporary peers.

Starting on day one, through our Collective Decision-Making model, we have been a guiding force for creating an equitable, creative collective. By pairing leadership opportunities with creative practice support, we’re changing how disabled artists value their work and are valued in the art ecosystem. This year, we're commemorating our journey with a book celebrating 25 artists who have impacted our community over 25 years, special events, an unprecedented exhibition in partnership with the Design Museum, and stories of inspiration that have defined our legacy.

Stay tuned as we share updates and highlights throughout the year, celebrating the spirit of creativity that has been the cornerstone of our mission for 25 years.

2wenty-5ive: Arts of Life 2000-2025

Arts of Life’s debut publication celebrates 25 years of community building and art making. This book details our first quarter century as an artist collective and working gallery and highlights a select group of artists who exemplify Arts of Life’s core values.

"To me, art makes me really happy about myself, it gives me a lift. It makes me feel happy to experience the different colors and the different textures. It makes me feel more comfortable. I like to spread my feelings through my paintings."

– David Krueger

"When I look at my pictures, and when other people look at my pictures, that is when I'm inspired. I'm inspired to help others, the studio, different things, and doing collaboration. The studio inspires me about doing artwork and drawing. I love making art."

– Alex Scott

"I want to shock them with my art! I want people to remember me when I am nine-hundred-and ten years old, up in heaven."

– Jean Wilson

People with disabilities were still rarely seen and weren’t the critical decision makers in their lives. The embarrassing state of services in Illinois motivated Denise to bring people together and create something new. Joining forces with other people with and without disabilities, they began to build what Arts of Life is today. Ronnie wanted to turn her art hobby into a career and Denny wanted everyone to have an equal voice. These tenants allowed, and continue to enable, all members to have a voice and leadership within the broader community. Arts of Life opened the first location in Chicago January 2000 with 9 founding artists, becoming the city’s first Alternative Day Program focusing on artistic vocational opportunities for people with disabilities.

Co-founders Ronnie Cuclich and Denise Fisher first meet.

Ronnie and Denise became neighbors when Ronnie moved into a CILA next door. Denise walked her dog by her house every day and eventually introduced herself and became friends with Ronnie’s housemate; who ultimately recommended Denny for a job with the agency supporting her as a case manager.

"Art makes me happy because I like working with my hands. I like the way I use them. I like being with people while making art. I have so many friends here."

– Brian Reid

"I like people seeing my artwork. I put music into it. I wanna see ‘em dance to it. Show you how they feel and what they think."

– Marcus Imani Kennedy

"A lot of people don’t believe in imaginary. You don’t need to worry, it’s not like it’s never lost, it’s always with you. Then again all you gotta do is follow your instincts, follow your steps and you know where you’re going with that."

– Susan Pasowicz
